Communicating Science on Social Media

In September 2020 I presented a virtual workshop to the Stanford Science Policy Group on techniques for communicating science on social media. The audience was primarily graduate students from a variety of disciplines, who were interested in using platforms like Twitter to connect with other scientists, inform a broader audience, and creatively present their research. I discuss topics like identifying an audience, exerting influence, and developing a strategy to get started on SciComm social media.

Oral Communication Tutor

I began working as an Oral Communication Tutor with Stanford’s Hume Center for Writing and Speaking in September 2016 and took on more responsibilities over the years. I consulted with students in one-on-one sessions to prepare for oral presentations, worked as a teaching assistant to public speaking courses, and presented interactive workshops to classes covering stage presence, visuals, and content.

Dive Operations Intern

I worked with the Dive Operations team at the South Carolina Aquarium during the summer of 2018. I translated our work behind the scenes so that aquarium guests could explore the Great Ocean Tank through an interactive dive show. Yes, I became a much more competent SCUBA diver, but discovering how to use the speaking mode as a form of immersive storytelling was a turning point in my science communication journey.

Kayaking Tour Guide

I began working as a volunteer at Congaree National Park in my home state of South Carolina while still in high school after becoming interested in field work. In the summer of 2016 after my freshman year at Stanford, I returned to the beautiful old growth bottomland swamp to lead guests through the natural history of the park. It demonstrated the power of experiential learning and the value of place-based learning for increasing environmental stewardship.
