Lights, Camera, Interview: Getting the Most out of a Video Interview

April 2020

A video interview compels the subject to step into the spotlight and centers the distinct style that shapes how they express ideas. While the opportunity to capture this style might be an exciting moment for a science writer, it can be downright terrifying for subjects unfamiliar with being on camera. I created this piece in collaboration with The Open Notebook to demystify the video interviewing process for science writers with a limited multimedia background. By focusing less on gear and more on soft skills, I tried to enable journalists to experiment with the video medium for capturing subjects in a new way.

Read the full story where I interview professional science filmmakers about their strategies for working with subjects.
