CREATOR, PRODUCER, EDITOR
Navigating STEM is a video series exploring and celebrating the diverse pathways to a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
“We keep evolving as individuals and we get to change our course as often as our curiosity changes. ”
— Kelly Benoit-Bird, acoustic marine biologist
“Keep pursuing those interests that you have. They're there for a reason and maybe that job that you want doesn't even exist right now.”
— Brian Kieft, software engineer
“You don't just come out into the world and go, ‘I already know how to build a robot.’ The only way that you’re gonna learn is by trying. Trying what works, trying what doesn’t work, and putting yourself out there.”
— Emery Nolasco, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle engineer
In addition to highlighting MBARI’s critical role as an oceanographic research institution, the series aims to expand the definition of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers. Many people—especially younger students just starting to be exposed to STEM—think of these careers as limited to those with advanced degrees, resources for field experiences, or traditional markers of success. But there are hundreds of paths to a thriving ocean research career, many unexpected, and all adapted to the unique needs of each person. Navigating STEM is an opportunity to engage in storytelling that reimagines the model of a STEM pipeline.
